Tsarap Chu, Zanskar and Indus Kayaking

A once in a lifetime Expedition across the Northwestern Frontiers of India. Challenging Whitewater, Deep Gorges, phantastic landscape and amazing culutres. 

The Tsarap Chu, Zanskar and Indus offer some 380km of Whitewater through the Tibetan Plateau of Ladakh. Stunning Monasteries perched high above in the Hills and challenging Whitewater for the Advanced/Expert Kayaker.
The Tsarap Chu starts high up in the Himalayas and the put in lies in about 4800m. Cutting it´s path through the Zanskar Mountain Range, the river journey will take us through difficult Whitewater and past Monasteries like Phukthal.
The River joins the Zanskar in Padum and will take us down to the confluence with the Indus past eremite places and tranquil beaches, some challenging whitewater but, mainly big wave trains before we reach some big whitewater on the lower reaches of the Indus.

In this itinerary you will not only get whitewater but, also experience tibetan/Ladakhi culture, many tibetan monasteries and high pass crossings.

Day 1     Arrive in Delhi. Transfer to the Hotel, Sightseeing if time permits.


Day 2     Departure to Leh. Transfer to the Hotel and acclamatization.


Day 3     Sightseeing in and around Leh. We will visit the Thikse Monastery, Old Palace of Leh and take a short excursion up to the high passes around Leh to speed up our acclamatization.

Day 4     Warm up on the Lower Indus with easy grade II/III Rapids.


Day 5     Drive up to the Upper Indus.


Day 6     Warm up kayaking on the Upper Indus. Grade III/V.


Day 7     Drive to Brandy Nalla (4800m)


Day 8     Kayak Tsarap Chu with grade III/IV+. Portage point.


Day 9     Kayak Tsarap Chu with mainly grade III/IV.


Day 10   We will visit the Phukthal Monastery today and will kayak some grade IV. Portage Point. One longer rapid might have to be portaged.


Day 11   Padum, well earned rest day. Visiting the Monastery.


Day 12   Following the Zanskar with mainly grade III.


Day 13   The Zanskar will offer some nice grade III/IV today.


Day 14   We will reach the confluence wit the Indus today. Some well earned beers before we head down the Nimu rapid (IV). The Indus will give us some great big volume style rapids before we reach our take out. Back to Leh.


Day 15   Chill out in Leh. Rest Day.


Day 16   Time to back up and leave for the Airport/Delhi.


Day 17   Sightseeing time in Delhi with the Red Fort, some bazaars and standard Indian hustle and bustle.
