Dolpo and Shey Phoksundo Trek

A glimpse of a beautiful and remote region with a landscape and traditions closely linked to the Tibetan Plateau.

Climb through the pine and juniper forests of the beautiful Suli Gad. Deep gorges and waterfalls are features of the route to the small village of Ringmo on the shores of the turquoise Phoksumdo Lake. Tiny Buddhist and Bonpo monasteries are numerous here and you may have the chance to join monks at the morning puja.

Where are you going?

Days 1-3
Flying into Kathmandu is an unforgettable experience with the Himalaya spread out before you. You will be met at the airport on arrival and transferred to your hotel. In the morning of day 2 a half-day city tour will introduce you to some of the highlights of Kathmandu. On Day 3 fly to Nepalgunj.

Days 4-7
After the short flight to Juphal we have a short trek to riverside Roop Ghar. Entering the Phoksumdo Khola the trail is through deep forest high above the river. It is a route of numerous ascents and descents, often dizzyingly steep. Eventually, above Palam – a winter settlement used by the people of Ringmo – you emerge from the forests and gorge into open country.
From a 3660m ridge there are close views of Nepal’s highest waterfall, the 330-meter-high source of the Suli Gad River. The ridge also affords the first views of the incredibly beautiful Phoksumdo Lake – an unearthly turquoise blue ringed by rocky crags and forest, framed by snow-capped peaks. Standing at the end of the lake, Ringmo is a picturesque village with chorten, mani walls, a Bon gompa and an entry chorten depicting complex mandalas of both Buddhist and Bon traditions.

Days 8-10
Head back down the Phoksumdo Khola to Juphal for the early morning flight to Nepalganj and on to Kathmandu.
